What is The Story Expedition?
Most of us inherited a way of understanding how life works long before we were old enough to question it.
What makes a person valuable. Where safety comes from. What children need in order to grow. What failure means. Who gets to belong. Where provision comes from. What we should do when something goes wrong.
Over time, assumptions like these can become almost invisible.
They stop looking like assumptions and start looking like reality.
We build families, schools, churches, organizations, healthcare systems, economies, and entire lives inside them. And when something isn't working, we usually ask how to improve what we've built rather than whether the assumptions underneath it are true.
The Story Expedition began with a different kind of question:
What if some of what we have accepted as “just the way things are” isn't the way things have to be?
And then we began to notice something else.
Jesus didn't simply offer a better way to live inside the world we already know. He announced that another Kingdom was already at hand.
A Father's world.
A reality in which God is Source, and we are His children.
What if we could learn to live there?
The Story Expedition is our practice of going to see.
What If We Lived As Though It Were True?
If God really is our Source, if we really are His children, and if His Kingdom really is at hand, then the invitation isn't simply to believe these things.
We get to risk participating as though they are true.
Sometimes the experiment is very small. What happens if I fast from manipulation—just for one day? What happens if I relate to a child without using fear? What if, today, I see everyone as an image bearer instead of as a competitor or a threat?
What if my motive is “How do I act like my real self?” instead of “How do I get what I want?”
What happens when I eat real food? Receive sunshine morning, noon, and night? Move? Laugh? Sleep? Trust that God’s design will work for me, too?
We pay attention to the stories beneath the systems and struggles around us. We listen to people. We study Scripture, history, and science. We notice what's happening in families, schools, churches, organizations, health, the land, and ordinary life. We ask what our ways of living are teaching us to believe about God, ourselves, one another, and where life comes from.
We aren't trying to prove another world is possible. We're learning to participate in the one Jesus said is already at hand—and paying attention to what happens.
Two Worlds
The World We Know Best
I am ultimately responsible for securing the life I need.
There is never enough.
My worth is something I have to prove.
I am exhausted in ways sleep doesn’t fix.
Failure is not information. It is a verdict.
Control seems necessary.
Problems organize my attention.
I build hamster wheels and get good at running.
Outcomes become evidence of my worth and success.
This life is something to get through until heaven.
Peace feels impossible.
The Father’s World
God is my Source. I am His child, here on purpose. His Kingdom is at hand now.
I receive life rather than manufacture it.
My Source never runs out.
Need invites receiving and relationship.
Life can be mysterious. I can wonder. I can be curious.
I am free to be wrong, which means I am free to be honest.
I am free to love without controlling the outcome.
I am invited to steward, create, repair, contribute, rest, and mature.
Fruit happens because I abide in the Vine and participate in the life He offers.
Peace is real.
The Father’s world isn’t the world we know best, turned inside out. It isn’t asking the same questions. Here, worth isn’t something to argue for. It was settled before we arrived.
These worlds can exist side by side—in the same family, school, church, organization, and even within the same person.
The difference isn’t always easy to see.
That’s why we pay attention to what each world produces.
